Crash Landing on You

Hello everyone! I’ve been a big fan of Korean Dramas for about 15 years, and I used to blog about it in Bahasa Indonesia. I’m starting to write in English now, hopefully it’s not that bad! Haha.

Anyway, the story started by introducing Yoon Se Ri’s character (played by Son Ye Jin), which is like a leader of a big company, who’s very independent. It’s funny because the first scene was about her staffs being nervous about a scandal of her and her ex-boyfriend, but all she cared about was just whether people can see her earrings  or not. She’s like saying that the more exposure she gets, the better. Pretty much like what’s happening in real life nowadays with all the Instagram influencers, hahahahaha. And the story gets even better, because she was offered by her Dad to take over their family’s company.

The next day, she wanted to try the new apparel for paragliding, which is actually a product of her company as well. It’s like she wants to give the best for the company and she’s like an awesome businesswoman who gives it all! And suddenly there’s a big tornado in front of her eyes, and somehow she landed in North Korea! This storyline actually cracks me up, in a good way, cos it’s very comical – and I think it’s funny. Because in Korean Dramaland – anything can happen, and we’re happy about it as long as that handsome man and that beautiful woman can get together somehow. Hahaha.

Yoon Se Ri, paragliding, which accidentally brings her to landing on North Korea.

Next is about the male lead of this drama, our beloved Hyun Bin as Captain Ri Jung Hyuk! He’s a South Korean army who’s leading a team in DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). In case you didn’t know, DMZ actually really exists in real life. It’s a strip of land across the Korean Peninsula, as a buffer zone between North Korea and South Korea. Anyhow, Captain Ri was the one who found Yoon Se Ri, who’s literally landing on a tree. Being the cool, strict, obeying the rule kind of army, he wanted to report Yoon Se Ri as a stranger on a DMZ. But he accidentally stepped on a landmine, and he needs her to help him call help using the Walkie Talkie. So now that she saved his life, he can’t report her and she ran away thinking that she can go back to South Korea somehow. But she ended up arriving at a village full of unfamiliar activities like people suddenly get together and start an exercise routine, children marching to school together, and she saw the sign saying ‘The Great Leader is Always with Us’. That’s when she realized that’s it’s North Korea!

This leads us to the final scene, where the Captain protectively standing over her when a military vehicle came approaching. This scene is like a magic trick that makes me addicted to Korean Drama. Whilst she wants to look brave and independent, she came to realisation that desperately needs help in North Korea. And just like a perfect mix of fluffy pancake, he came in perfect timing to protect her. I don’t know how, but he just looks so perfect, protective, cool and doesn’t talk much but very reliable. Does this kind of person exist in real life?? Hahahaha.

This scene. Aww! What a perfect recipe to finish Episode 1!

There are other elements in this first episode, which is Yoon Se Ri’s brothers who apparently do not want her to be the one taking over the company – and they have their own issues, one had a fight with a union leader, the other one just got scammed and lost money. More interestingly, the one who scammed him also appeared in this first episode and he’s quite good looking, so I have a feeling that he’s gonna stay and be more involved in the storyline, probably? I don’t know.

And I love the fact that the Captain’s team were funny as well, one likes to drink and get drunk even when working, the other one likes to watch Korean Drama. I like that even though this drama is about army, North Korea, but there’s always sense of humour and it reminds me to not take things too seriously – because it’s Korean Drama.

The last element of this episode was the grave robbers who illegally digged and found the cultural artifacts, which I think will be important part of the story, with that Officer Chul Kang having agenda to do something bad – the fact that he killed those guys means that he’s the villain in this Korean drama. But hopefully he’s not gonna be that annoying – or even if he does, hopefully Captain Ri will always win! Hahahaha.

Okay, all in all this first episode of Crash Landing on You is very cute! Because you can from the epilogue of this episode – that when Captain Ri found Yoon Se Ri, he stopped for a minute and watching her throwing tantrum like ‘How can I land here? What the hell happened?’ And he was smiling watching her. Awwwh that kind of moment is actually the best! That melts a certain part of my heart when he does that. So cute!

I like how Korean Drama nowadays give equal recognition to women as much as men, because I remember years ago the female characters are more towards romance-driven, desperately wants a boyfriend, and those sorts of stuff, but now it’s moving towards new era of K-Drama. Not that I’m saying I didn’t like the previous K-Dramas, because I did and I still do, but I like the fact that it is keeping up with the trend of the world, and it’s thriving to be better and better.

I also think that Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin did a great job in building chemistry between them, it’s very addictive to watch them together. When I watch Korean Drama, one of the things that keeps me going is when I know that this perfect couple will end up being together somehow, and it’s gonna be okay. It’s a nice feeling to know that despite whatever shit is going on, it’s gonna be worth it! Hahaha.

Another plus point of this drama is that scene about villagers life in North Korea. It’s very interesting to watch more about what daily life in North Korea looks like, at least in Korean Drama – not the documentary kind of thing – because other Korean Dramas are mostly about South Korea.

So that’s it for today, I’m so happy to have shared my joy of watching this drama with you, and hopefully there’s someone who enjoys this episode so I have enough confidence to do next ones. Along with this blog, I have a podcast talking about Korean Drama.

Thank you and please comment below if you like Crash Landing on You too!

How to Play Monopoly “Hybrid”

I’ve always wanted to share about one of my obsessions these days. As a newly married couple we were thinking of board games to play when we have nothing to watch on Netflix (or sometimes we just don’t know how to choose one, haha)

We tried Monopoly (Australia Edition), and because it’s just the two of us, eventually we got bored! Of course. Then we tried Monopoly Deal, but it was very easy for either one of us to end the game too. I think the number of players, which in my case it’s just two of us, somewhat took away the excitement of element of surprise to the game itself.

So one random night, we were joking about mixing Monopoly Board Game and Monopoly Deal. Then we thought, wait a minute. Why not?? Sounds fun! And we did. Since then, it was interesting to play the new Monopoly (or as I call it: Monopoly Hybrid) and I’d share the excitement with you guys. Of course, you’re free to adapt how to play according to your own house rules. Anything that works to make monopoly great again for you, really!

To understand how to play, you will need both Monopoly Board Game and Monopoly Deal.

ACTION CARDS, JUST SAY NO, AND CURSED CARD

  • Forced Deal
Swap any one of your Properties with any one of your opponents’ Properties. You may not take a Property that’s part of a complete set.
  • Sly Deal
Steal one Property from any player, and place it in front of you. You may not steal a Property that’s part of a complete set.
  • Deal Breaker
Steal a complete Property Set, including any buildings, from any player.
  • Wild Property
You can use this card as any Action Card, it’s up to you!
  • Just Say No
Cancel an Action Card that is played against you.
  • The Cursed Card
You opponent can use this card on you as any Action Card, it’s up to him/her! This is basically like the reverse card of Wild Property. We use the ‘money card’ as the cursed card.

HOW TO PLAY?

1. Insert some Monopoly Deal cards into Chances & Community Chest deck on the Monopoly Board Game!

2. Also put a few Monopoly Cards in the middle of the board, so when you land in Free Parking you also get to pick 1 card randomly.

3. When you pay tax or fines, put in in the middle of the board, and if can get the money when you land in Free Parking.

4. Start the first round by getting the properties you landed for free. By doing this, it’s fun because both players suddenly have lots of properties but also still lots of money.

The rest of the game is played the same way with classic Monopoly Board Game. By putting the action cards into the board game, there will be unexpected surprises happening along the way of the game.

When you get Deal Breaker, for example, you can steal one whole set (with the hotels, even) that your opponent has built by spending lots of money! But on the other hand, he can always get the Cursed Card, and steal them back (or steal something yours that is even better!).

Anyway, hope you have fun playing the DIY Monopoly Hybrid that we accidentally invented. Cheers!!

Moving to Melbourne

Moving to Melbourne: 5 Things You Should Know!

When I moved to Melbourne few years ago, I thought I had done enough homework to prepare what I’d need. Turned out, there were lots of things that I wished I’d known earlier. This list comes from my personal experience and stories from friends, including some tips that hopefully might help.

1. Know the Weather

As most of you might have already heard the phrase about Melbourne ‘four seasons in one day‘, the weather here is indeed very unpredictable. If you’re from a country that’s not used to extreme weather, Melbourne’s can be a bit overwhelming and sometimes it makes me miss my home country even more.

Tips: Make it a habit to always check the weather forecast before you go. This might seem simple, but you don’t wanna be the only one who didn’t bring umbrella when others already know thunderstorm’s coming.

2. Know the Public Transport

Public transport is one of the best things we can enjoy in Melbourne. One of the main reasons why I wanted to study in Melbourne (instead of other cities in the world), is because of stories I heard about how nice it is to go anywhere independently using public transport. That expectation is proven to be true, yes, but like what I said before: not always rainbows and butterflies!

Tips: Download the app for PTV (Public Transport Victoria) and Tramtracker on your phone. Later, when you arrive in Melbourne, buy your Myki card. You can buy it at train stations, 7 eleven, or some convenience stores. Another lesson to take from my previous unfortunate event: don’t forget to touch on your Myki card, otherwise you might get fined by the inspector. I did.

3.Know your Interests

Just because you are moving to another country, doesn’t mean that you can’t do things that you enjoyed in the past. What did you do when you were in your home country? Did you play any sport? Did you play any instruments? Did you enjoy doing any particular hobbies, e.g. cooking, baking, fishing, photography, knitting, gardening, or writing blogs like what I’m doing right now? You can join student association or any organization. You can go to places of worship too, that is also a very good place to find a community. And just like everything else: take your time, don’t rush. Find a community that you fit in and become a better version of yourself.

Tips: A community where you can speak the same language is good, especially you have the relatable challenges, culture, tradition, and of course similar FOOD! Melbourne is a great place to explore food from different countries. Oh by the way, if you like Indonesian food, I have curated all Indonesian restaurants in Melbourne that you can (and should) try!

4.Know your Accomodation

If you want Melbourne to be your second home, it would help if you find a house that you like. It does not have to be a fancy overpriced apartment in Melbourne CBD, but it’s important to know about where do you want to live, what kind of accomodation suits you, and who you’re gonna live with. There are many (maybe too much?) information you can find online about this topic, and it can be overwhelming! I’ve been in your shoes, you’re not alone. The most important thing is, you should know what you need. After that, you can add what you want depending on your budget too.

Tips: If you’re not sure about what kind of accomodation you want on your arrival in Melbourne, it’s not a bad idea to go to student accomodation, share apartment with someone you know, or find a place through mutual friends. After you’re already settling in Melbourne, you will have a better idea about what you actually need or what kind of accomodation you really want.

5.Know your Budget

At the end of the day, managing money is one major life skill that you need when moving to another country. You might feel like everything in Melbourne is much more expensive than Asian countries. We can’t change the price, but we can do some things about it.

Tips: Learn to do it yourself (e.g. cooking, cleaning, lawn mowing,), avoid getting fined (know the laws!), find extra income (e.g. part time job, sell stuff you don’t need), and find some free things to do in Melbourne (e.g. museum hopping, library membership, local community sports)
